The message? We must either abandon principle OR success? Or would the (implicit) message be 'moderation is the key'?

One can practise Karate but it may not be effective against mighty brute force. Why not practise Akido instead and use that brute force against itself? Assimilate into the system and change/collapse from within rather than bang yourself against the hard outer shell.

Tactics should be adapted to the foe and not the other way around. There is so much strength available but not being used because of inappropriate tactics, what a pity.

In any case, thank you for the 'flashback' to the 80's.

Thank you Ganga for your comment. Unfortunately I could not find a version of the clip with subtitles for non-Tamil readers to understand.

Regarding assimilation into the system and changing it from within - I know there are some that are really trying to and others that either get co-opted or practice self-censorship.

A good book to check out would be James Gomez's Self Censorship: The Singapore Shame -
